On the 4th of August the Pasifika O Wairarapa Trust facilitated an Immigration 101 Seminar. This saw many members of the community discuss important matters around immigration including changes to legislation, the pay rate for migrant workers and the responsibility of employers.
The purpose of this seminar was to create awareness of the increased number of migrant and RSE workers. It was a great opportunity to bring together all those that are involved with the RSE and migrant workers – including community leaders, rugby club representatives, police and current RSE migrant work contractors.
Frankie Tran and associates from Immigration New Zealand share the process of applying for work visas and extending visas. They also gave an overview of the upgrades on the new policies.
Local immigration lawyer, Donna Watt, from Gibson Sheat Lawyers, presented on current cases. She discusses the roles and responsibilities of employers, employees and migrant workers.
RSE migrant workers make up a significant part of our Pasifika community here in the Wairarapa. It was encouraging to see advocacy in action and to help the wider community gain a better understanding of how RSE migrant workers can be supported.
